Manchester host atmosphere experiment

14 September 2011 last BBC News updated at 17: 01 GMT by Lucy Ewing Faces on screen compared the two faces, when they were unveiled Wednesday you are feeling blue? Or a little green with envy? Or you have a purple day?

The mood of people in Manchester has by researchers in the great Manchester health experiment was measured.

The mood at two points has thousands of people during the day, with a color wheel on the experiment site.

After selecting one 38 colors and shades to 09: 00 BST, they were asked to help do something, to its welfare connection with people around them around, active, taking notice of their environment, to learn something or other to give - as advised by Manchester's Director of public health David Regan.

A series of events was held in the Centre of town, including training with city and United, sing with choirs and can draw a huge black canvas on the people, to people who do something positive to help.

The participants were then asked to return to the site, at 15: 00 and choose a color.

The first results, as a face were shown dotted on the big screen in Exchange Square at about 10: 00.

Boffiny less

The second set - shows the difference in the face - to face up about 16: 00.

Researchers stated, the initial results suggest that the participants were happier when they picked their second colour. This be so understood could by the colors and often certain colors appeared, she said.

The detailed breakdown will be analyzed by researchers and published at a later date.

The experiment was developed by Manchester of academic Health Science Centre (MAHSC) - a partnership between the University and six Greater Manchester NHS organisations.

Centre, founded is, scientific research, in 2009 merge NHS staff and patients.

But that was all just a publicity stunt? Or was it actually a credible scientific basis on it?

The wheel was developed by the University of Manchester researchers Dr. Helen Carruthers and Prof Peter Whorwell.

Coloring

After conducting a study with people were worried and depressed and they formed a group of people who had no mental problems, a connection between colors and mood.

The question of the color on a wheel was most attracted to them, chose both mostly yellow. Both usually blue chose as their favorite color.

But on the question of which color represented the mood most people worried and depressed to healthy participants who tended to gray, in contrast, select yellow.

A separate group of healthy volunteers were asked whether she have a associated with the colors on the wheel with positive or negative moods.

Dr. Linda Magee, Chief Operating Officer of MAHSC, said: "We wanted to make less 'boffiny' imagination and scientific research, although there are many tinkerers behind it."

While Wednesday experiment was not a"proper controlled experiment' mental well-being, it"proper scientific research with patient groups based on review", said she.

Great themes of happiness, of very happy to point to very unhappy research would be captured, she said.

In color as well as in his shadow are relevant, she said.

"Would you shadow a specific color but can specify the mood."

"We hope to get some interesting information from the analysis, what we do on the responses that we get," she added.

The Centre wanted the experiment to use people to think, to encourage their mental and physical health at a level.

In addition, researchers need more research locally.

Patients do better in an environment where studies will be carried out, says Dr Magee. If we do no research in this country, that it goes somewhere else, she adds.

But most importantly, research needs with patients in the North West, performed for the treatment of specific issues to the field.

"There are large disparities in the Northwest,", said Dr. Magee.

"We have the highest rates of people die from smoking conditions and heart disease."

"We need attend domestic participants, so that we can understand our people."

"Research is studies not only on drugs, but also to understand attitudes and perceptions of health."
