Children behave badly? Blame It on Mom

All small children can be aggressive, but those who remain explosive at the time where they enter kindergarten have their mothers to blame, according to new research published Wednesday in the journal child development.

Some children are much more fussy than others. Researchers wondered if it was the nature of the work, or innate. Or a combination? Scientists at the University of Minnesota, examined in the puzzle, scrutinizing 267 mother-child pairs, or dyads, recruitment in a local public health clinic. MOM will be not too happy with the conclusion: a hostile relationship between mothers and their small gives rise to persistent provocative behaviour.

In General, babies are quite Placid. But somewhere in early late and ill-treated at the beginning, the children to be a handful. (You are probably familiar with the Terrible Twos.) In a typical development path, aggression is expected to peak at the age of 2.5, and then collapse. In theory, a typical 4-year-old is much less aggressive than a typical 2-year-old and a typical 6-year-old is will be your average 4-year-old.

But there are still a few behavioral outliers. "Kids top of the stack are actual hellions to kindergarten or first year gave risk to stay this way", said lead author Michael Lorber, researcher science in family translational research group at the University of New York, formerly at the University of Minnesota. "If an acts of 5 years as a 2-year-old, you're in trouble."

More: Key to a suitable child: adapted to parents?

Early childhood - striking attack, - by example, or launch of frequent crises was associated with problems at school, depression, drinking and, on the road, aggressive behaviour towards a spouse.

In the average American family, aggression is often modelled by the parents. The Lorber research group found that more than 70% of moms and dads hit or spank their children. But this is not at this study, of 7 to-10 - day old babies has submitted to a neurological examination that included bites and cold objects placed against their skin. Reaction of infants to annoying sensations determined their basic level of "neonatal difficulty." Then, when infants aged 3 and 6 months, researchers asked mothers on the temperament of their babies. At the same time, they found mothers to feed their children, noting if the women acted affectionate or irritated.

Later, at 24 and 42 months, mothers have been observed assisting children to retrieve objects from a tube. Finally, when the children were in kindergarten or first grade, the mothers and teachers each note: the behaviour of children.

The most important predictor of sustained hostility? Negative parental at three and six months. "Nothing on the behaviour of the child below age predicted anything," Lorber said. "But we found that negative parental in childhood was really important.".

Here are the Lorber equation: negative mother = negative dyad = problems of behaviour at school.

More: Dark side of dads: new fathers with depression Spank their babies more

What to do? To begin, not beat yourself (metaphorically speaking, of course) If you are a MOM of a turbulent grade-schooler. It is likely that mother-child interaction is not the only factor at play here. Genetics is probably influence the behaviour.

Second, be nice to your children. "Our research suggests you need to start really early on," explains Lorber. "A sensitive parent and needs social and emotional your baby is always a good thing."

No vaccine anthrax, test on children _ for now

WASHINGTON (AP) - the anthrax vaccine to be tested in children? It will be a little longer until the Government decides.

A Board of Directors said Friday that ethical issues should be resolved - but if this can be accomplished the vaccine may be tested in children to ensure it is safe and learn the essence of dose where it is necessary in a terrorist attack.

Due to concerns that terrorists could use the potentially deadly bacteria, the Government has stored the vaccine. It has been widely tested on adults, but children ever.

The question is to test doctors will know if the immune system for children meet the shots well enough for the protection of the signal or not. The children would not be subject to anthrax.

The National Biodefense Science Board said Friday that a separate review panel should consider the ethical issues do these tests in children. If completed successfully, the Panel, said, the Department of Health and Human Services should develop a plan for a study of the vaccine in children.

How protect youth after an attack of coal is a difficult question, says Dr. Nicole Lurie, Member of the Commission and assistant Secretary for preparedness and response of the public health service. "Protection of children is still, for me, among the most important responsibilities that we as a nation."

The Council provides advice to the Department of Health and Human Services, on the preparations for the chemical, biological and nuclear events. His voice was 12 - 1.

There is no date limit for the Government to decide or not to follow. And if it does not agree, we don't know too much how long he would to find money for this type of research and to obtain authorization to review the boards at medical centres which would conduct studies.

Another big question is whether if the parents would send their children to test a vaccine when there is no immediate threat. It is not possible to get the coal from the vaccine, but there are side effects. Adults, tir-site pain, muscle pain, fatigue and headache are the main and rare but serious allergic reactions have been reported.

Anthrax is among several potential weapons of bioterrorism and is of particular interest because it was used in the letters sent to media and others in 2001, claiming lives of five people and sickening 17. That prompted an extensive screening of mail and better ventilation and testing in postal facilities, and Government agencies.

The FBI attributed the attacks - by email on Bruce Ivins, a scientist with a lab biodefense of the army, who committed suicide before could be charged.

Anthrax can be difficult to treat, especially if someone has inhaled spores of anthrax. Millions of doses of antibiotics have been stored since the 2001 episode, and two experimental treatments of toxin-clearing are also be stored.

US troops deploy in Iraq, Afghanistan and other countries are required to obtain anthrax shots. Since 1998, more than 1 million have been vaccinated. After the prosecution opposed the requirement, a federal judge suspended the programme in 2004, find fault in the process of the Food and Drug Administration to approve the drug. The following year, the FDA has reaffirmed its conclusion that the vaccine is safe.

Gastric balloon plan for children

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota
27 October 2011 Last updated at 12:15 GMT Overweight teenagers in South Yorkshire could be fitted with gastric balloons, if a trial is approved.

Sheffield Children's Hospital said it wanted to use the balloons to help 10 morbidly obese 13 to 18-year-olds lose weight.

Those weighing between 14 and 20 stone (89kg-127kg) will be considered.

Dr Neil Wright from the hospital said the procedure was "intended as an option for young people where other treatments have not been successful".

The hospital said the procedure had been found to be effective for adults but very few studies had been carried out on young people.

The gastric balloon discourages overeating by inflating in the stomach to give the feeling of being full.

Dr Wright, a consultant paediatrician and obesity specialist, said: "The gastric balloon is a treatment normally for adults and which, as far as we know, has never been trialled with teenagers in the UK.

"We see it as a possible alternative to gastric surgery for young people with severe weight problems.

"If the trial is approved the team will be working with youngsters over a two-year period to see if the balloons will kick-start weight loss and, with the help of the behavioural support programme, keep the weight off in the long term.

"This is not a quick fix as the lifestyle advice and support is very important in helping young people to lose weight and giving them the information they need in the future to manage a healthy lifestyle."

Lisa Beardsmore, from Rotherham, whose son is overweight said: "I don't think surgeons should be offering children at this age such drastic measures. Who is to say that your child won't change themselves?

"The correct way is for children to eat three balanced meals a day."

If the proposal is given the go-ahead by the hospital's ethics committee, the trial would last for two years.

Patients would be recruited through hospital consultants, GPs and patients requesting referrals.

Study: Gulf Seafood Unsafe for Pregnant Women and Children?

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota
John Moore/Getty Images A worker shows off shrimp fresh from the Gulf of Mexico at a seafood retailer on May 18, 2010 in Port Sulfur, Louisiana.

Is Gulf seafood safe to eat? The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gave the green light following the BP oil spill that dumped nearly 5 million barrels of crude off the coast of Louisiana last year, but now an environmental watchdog group says the agency's standards are "based on outdated science" and underestimate the risk of cancer-causing contaminants to pregnant women and children eating seafood from the Gulf.

At issue are what the FDA considers safe levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), compounds found in oil, coal and gasoline that have been linked to cancer in animals and humans. According to Miriam Rotkin-Ellman, a researcher with the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), the FDA accepts 100 to 10,000 times more PAH contamination in seafood than the NRDC deems safe for vulnerable populations.

That conclusion was published online Wednesday in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives. On the same day, the NRDC filed a petition [PDF] asking the FDA to reevaluate its science and set new limits for PAHs in seafood to ensure public safety, especially for vulnerable populations like pregnant women and children.

VIDEO: Lingering Worries About Health and Seafood in Louisiana

On her blog, Rotkin-Ellman noted "six major flaws" in the FDA's assessment of PAHs in Gulf seafood: "assuming everyone weighs 80 kg (176 lbs), underestimating how much seafood Gulf residents eat, ignoring the cancer risk from naphthalene [a common PAH] contamination, failing to address the increased vulnerability of pregnant women and children, allowing for a high level of cancer risk, and assuming that the contamination will only last five years."

Safe standards for PAH contamination, based on new calculations by Rotkin-Ellman and her team, were markedly different from what the FDA found. Wrote Rotkin-Ellman:

For example, FDA said that 123,000 micrograms of naphthalene per kilogram of shrimp was safe for everyone to eat. According to our calculations, only 5.91 micrograms should have been allowed to protect pregnant women and children who eat a lot of seafood. For comparison, our calculations show that 46.99 micrograms of naphthalene per kilogram of shellfish would be safe for an adult consumer.

According to our calculations, the risk of cancer associated with eating Gulf shellfish contaminated at the levels FDA says is safe could be as high as 20,000 in a million. Put another way, this means that if 1,000 pregnant women (and their children) ate Gulf seafood contaminated at the levels FDA said are safe, 20 of the children born to them would be at significant risk of cancer from the contamination.

The NRDC study found that up to 53% of shrimp tested had PAH levels exceeding the safe limits that the group had determined for pregnant women who eat a lot of Gulf shellfish. Rotkin-Ellman said her study did not find reason for concern for other adults.

MORE: How Safe is Gulf Seafood?

For its part, the FDA stands by its calculations and says that seafood fished from areas of the Gulf that have been reopened since the BP spill or were never closed is safe. Reported the Tallahassee Democrat:

The FDA said most of the seafood it sampled after the spill had no detectable trace of oil. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals calculated that every day for five years the average person could eat 1,575 jumbo shrimp or 130 oysters without health concerns.

"We're very confident that the steps that we have put in place to assure the safety of seafood have worked," FDA spokesman Doug Karas told the Democrat. "We put in an extensive program of sampling, at that time and since then, and the results have consistently been 100 to 1,000 times below our levels of concern."

Our children need time not stuff

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota
13 September 2011 Last updated at 21:25 GMT Do British parents spend too much on material goods for their children?

Why are British children so unhappy? Four years after Unicef sparked national soul-searching with analysis showing child well-being in the UK at the bottom of a league of developed nations, the organisation has attempted to explain our problem.

The answer, it seems, is that we put too little store on family time and too much on material goods. Unicef paints a picture of a country that has got its priorities wrong - trading quality time with our children for "cupboards full of expensive toys that aren't used".

"Parents in the UK want to be good parents, but aren't sure how," the research suggests. "They feel they don't have the time, and sometimes the knowledge, and often try to compensate for this by buying their children gadgets and clothes."

The research compares Britain with Sweden and Spain. While the UK languishes in 21st, and last, place in the child well-being table, they come second and fifth respectively.

One reason they perform so much better, according to Unicef, is that in both countries "family time is protected" and children "all have greater access to activities".

"In Sweden their social policy allows family time and their culture massively reinforces it. In Spain fathers do work long hours, but the extended family is still very important and women stay at home to look after their children."

The report argues that the pressure of the working environment and rampant materialism combine to damage the well-being of our children. They want our attention but we give them our money.

"All children interviewed said that material goods did not make them happy, but materialism in the UK seems to be just as much of a problem for parents as children," the research concludes. "Parents in the UK often feel compelled to purchase consumer goods which are often neither wanted or treasured."

It is a profoundly depressing analysis of British life, not least because it rings true.

Time poor

The importance of parents devoting energy and love to the rearing of their children is accepted by political leaders from across the spectrum, but maximising income and encouraging consumption are regarded as vital components for economic growth.

In the UK, the demands of the latter often undermine the former.

Parents work all hours to increase family income but then are too exhausted or too busy to give their children the attention they need and deserve.

Of course the Swedes and the Spanish are materialistic too, but the researchers found parents in these countries more able to defy the consumer society.

"Parents in the UK… don't know how to challenge the materialist culture they see around them. This is in stark contrast to the families the researchers spent time with in Sweden and Spain."

Source: Unicef *Material well-being is calculated using three criteria: household incomes, access to basic educational resources, and housing living space.

One reason for Britain's poor performance, it is suggested, is that material inequality is much higher here than in other rich countries. The chart above - from another Unicef report card published last November - shows the UK with a far wider gap in material well-being than the OECD average.

The consequence is that poorer families feel they have to struggle even harder to get their children the stuff that is equated to status: the latest computer games, branded trainers and corporate logos.

"Parents and children feel massive external pressure from a materialistic culture, which they know won't bring happiness, but are conforming to none-the-less," the research finds. "Lack of family time and materialism is particularly felt among poorer families in the UK compared to the other countries."

Another problem is that British teenagers do not have enough to do - particularly within the educational arena.

"In the UK, children's time in active creative pursuits diminishes in secondary schools compared to children in Spain and Sweden. This is particularly true among older, deprived children in the UK."

Unicef's remedy is for Britain to look at its priorities. They want politicians to consider specific measures to support families:

a living wage so that families earn enough to spend more time with each otherprotection of children's facilities so they have the opportunity to be active

Before the last election, David Cameron gave a speech in which he said that "what matters most to a child's life chances is not the wealth of their upbringing but the warmth of their parenting."

Today's Unicef research would seem to concur. If Britain is serious about doing the best for its children, it needs to give them more time not more stuff.

Our children need time not stuff

AppId is over the quota
Verbringen 13.

HEALTH MANAGEMENT. 115 U.S. children, teens died from flu last season: CDC

n">(Reuters) - Some 115 U.S. children and teens died from influenza last flu season, and many of those deaths were of children who had not gotten an annual flu shot, U.S. health officials said on Thursday.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends flu shots for children as young as six months old, yet less than a quarter of the 74 children over age six months who died between September 2010 and August 2011 had been vaccinated.
"It's vital that children get vaccinated," Dr. Lyn Finelli, chief of the CDC's Surveillance and Outbreak Response Team, said in a statement.
The CDC said parents often mistakenly think healthy children can survive a bout of the flu, but that is not always so.
Among the deaths detailed in the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, released on Thursday, the team found about half of the children had no prior medical condition that would put them at increased risk of flu complications.
The researchers said being young is itself a flu risk factor. Of the children who died, 46 percent were younger than 5 and 29 percent were younger than 2.
Among the 57 children who did have a medical condition, over half had a neurological disorder, 30 percent had pulmonary disease, 25 percent had a chromosome or genetic disorder and 19 percent had congenital heart disease or other cardiac disease.
Only half of the 94 children who died in the hospital were given antiviral drugs, such as Tamiflu. Since the 2009 H1N1 swine flu pandemic, the CDC has recommended immediate treatment with antiviral medications in patients with severe flu symptoms.
"We know the flu vaccine isn't 100 percent effective, especially not in children with high risk medical conditions," Finelli said in a statement.
"That's why it's essential that these two medical tools be fully utilized. Vaccinate first; then use influenza antiviral drugs as a second line of defense against the flu. Right now we aren't fully using the medical tools at our disposal to prevent flu illnesses and deaths in children."
Since the CDC started tracking pediatric flu deaths in 2004, the annual number of deaths has ranged from a low of 46 in the 2005-06 flu season to 282 during the H1N1 swine flu pandemic in 2009-2010.
Even though the circulating strains of flu have not changed since the 2010-2011 flu season, the CDC recommends all Americans over the age of six months get flu shots -- even those who got flu shots last year against the same flu strains.
This year's vaccine protects against H1N1 swine flu and two other flu strains called H3N2 and influenza B.

HEALTH MANAGEMENT. Study casts a wider net for risky blood pressure in children

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - could more children than previously assumed his risk of dangerously high blood pressure, with more than a quarter with blood vessels, which look like the much older, according to a new study.
Since there is a theoretical possibility that some of these children, a stroke or a heart attack, which might suffer down road, say the researchers, that the results mean that all children should their blood pressure measured.
"I believe it is important that everyone for high blood pressure, is shown," said Dr. Karen Redwine Arkansas Childrens Hospital in little rock, which the results in the journal of Pediatrics are displayed.
"The overall rate for the development of high blood pressure, if you are a teenager is still very low," added to them, in an interview with Reuters Health. "But it is a subset of people, the development of high blood pressure somewhere between two and five times, that is, and many of those are children, now normally would apply."
These children have slightly increased blood pressure and diagnosed with so-called "Prehypertension." The label is disputed, however, because no disease to describe it - it is a risk factor for the development of later high blood pressure, which itself is a risk factor for heart disease.
An expert, who said not part of the new study he worried it could be used, to push drugs without evidence, that they do something good children.
"What me a little worried is that they are talking about the pharmacologic therapy,", said Dr. Curt D. Furberg, expert on heart disease prevention and drug safety at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
"If I me the author list, it is one of the Bristol-Myers Squibb," he added. "Pharmaceutical companies want to increase their market." "In this area sense not taking into account the healthy young children for pharmacological therapy."
The national heart, lung and Blood Institute in 2004 defined Prehypertension in children as a top blood pressure number between 120 and 139 or a lower number between 80 and 89. high blood pressure starts at 140 over 90.
If changes of lifestyle such as cutting down on salt and exercise sufficient to control high blood pressure in children, NHLBI advises drugs to try.
In adults the ups hypertension of the risk of stroke and heart attack a few percent. However, for children, the NHLBI recognizes that the long-term effects unknown are with high blood pressure for children, as are the side effects of drug treatment.
"In my mind, there are many more pressing issues in medicine as a screening for hypertension among young people, where we don't even know if treatment is useful," Furberg, Professor of public health, told Reuters Health.
The new study is an attempt, estimate how often children with Prehypertension further to develop full-blown high blood pressure or hypertension.
Development of data from a large test study - sponsored by pharmaceutical companies-at Texas schools, found Redwine and colleagues, that 11 of 1,006 students developed high blood pressure during the study.
This corresponds to a rate of 1 in 200 young people each year. Although the rate for children with Prehypertension appeared similar, a broader definition tripled created by Redwine and her colleagues nearly the rate.
After only a blood pressure higher than normal group a child in the "at risk" would set the new definition.
Until now, Redwine, explains to doctors think that a high blood pressure measurement only a Zufall--could be because the child nervously or somewhat ill was used.
Now, said she, "when it is raised only once, then you must observe and monitor it."
Currently, not the NHLBI recommend drug therapy for children with Prehypertension. But the new report suggests the investigating of the use of drugs in the "endangered."
According to the Texas screening study could that be, more than 26 percent of U.S. teenagers with the new definition-including healthy children who are not overweight.
Furberg and other critics is Prehypertension--not to mention the extended definition in the new students-a concept that comes with over slide diagnosis, over treatment and wasteful expenditure.
He said "That's what the industry is trying to do, to get people to drugs,". "they insist that for adults, and now they seem to children, which is tedious."
Redwine neutralized, although their co-authors at Bristol-Myers Squibb is busy, not drug use in children with Prehypertension are in favour of her report.
"It is not the point to say that they have to be," said Reuters Health.
The US preventive services task force, a State-sponsored group of Experts recommends screening adults for high blood pressure. It is currently the guidelines 2003 updated for children and young people, who pointed out that the evidence is not sufficient to weigh the harm and the benefits of screening children.

HEALTH MANAGEMENT. White House childhood obesity task force must focus on the treatment for minority children

The White House task force on childhood obesity, created by the President as part of the first lady "Let's move" campaign, is resolved to be the epidemic of obesity within a generation rising the land at a rate of 5 percent by 2030, what began in the late 1970s the rate before obesity by the year.
A recent U-M study, published online before using print in obesity journal researchers evaluated the balance of prevention and treatment, for the objectives, by the task force may 2010-report ordered.
Is a shared emphasis on the prevention of obesity and treatment strategies required to achieve this goal, according to researchers. Prevention programmes solely deal with according to the epidemic, the children, who are already obese, especially minorities. Obesity treatment strategies have an important part of the equation.
"There are many discussions on the prevention of obesity for children." This is certainly important, but it is not the whole story. "Because so many children are already overweight, it need greater efforts focused on treatment, if we succeed", Joyce M. LEE, MD, mph, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and communicable diseases at the U-M medical school and a U-M c.s.. clinician says Mott Childrens Hospital.
Rates of obesity in the United States are much higher for minority children, with 20% black and Mexican-American children affected, with only 15 percent for white children childhood. Because the burden of obesity is so high, the study includes prevention strategies alone will not help, the task force, be to achieve objective.
"Effective treatment strategies, in particular targeted minority children, in particular are needed," says Lee, the lead author of the study.
The research suggests that healthy hunger-free kids act of 2010, reverse progress efforts to the obesity epidemic can help recent legislation, including the. The law increased financial support for the national school lunch program, offering free or reduced price meals to students with low income.
However, the researchers say that the law the affected by obesity can have a greater impact on the prevention of obesity in healthy children, instead of reducing obesity in children.
"It is not enough only to develop new, culturally relevant and effective treatment strategies focused on minority children be." "We the financial obstacles to these treatment strategies for children in households with low income, of which there are many racial / ethnic minorities, must reduce", says Lee.
Only ten States include offered obesity nutritional and behavioral therapy by programs such as Medicaid. Given the number of disadvantaged children, which are likely to be more obese, but is it important to say that this scheme for all authors available.
"The health care reform bill passed an important role in the cover for overweight children, can play in 2010 as requires it, new health plans to cover obesity screening and counseling for children," says Lee.

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - screening children to the sleep problems and sleep strategies discuss with parents could teenagers at school with better night-time rules, routines help, suggests new research from Australia.
Researchers found that if they had sleep-related consultations have with parents, children, the tend to be less sleep problems and to get better bedtime as children whose parents do not advise habits.
The study was small and not to demonstrate that the sleep improvements to changes in academic achievements of children this year.
Still, the results show that "sleep disorders in school children are treatable using... a short behavioral intervention", said study author Jon QUACH, at the University of Melbourne, Reuters Health in an e-Mail.
"Consult parents should sleep for your child if they are concerned," he added.
In five and six-year-old, that related behavior, most sleeping children on researchers say.
"Some of them have poor sleeping habits, where become too late to bed, they have a good-night routine nor many of them have even parents for them to stay, when they go to sleep at night", said Pediatric sleep specialist Jodi Mindell, St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia, which was not involved in the study.
"In this age group some night, fear" said they, and fear may increase as the children start school.
The current study on this back-to-school timeframe, including children, who were led in their first year of primary school. This is an important window for the treatment of insomnia, Quach said, since children, who sleep well might not more trouble, the transition to the school, that school performance and poorer relations puts it later for worse.
Quach and his colleagues studied about 1,500 parents of children from 22 different elementary schools in Melbourne. These parents 161 said her child had a moderate or severe sleep and 108 were recruited for the study. Children with serious breathing problems sleep-related, for example were excluded.
Half of the participating parents had followed a private consultation in College, by a telephone call of two weeks later behaviour to discuss sleep strategies based on their child problems. The other half were not additional help offered.
Next year, the researchers investigated parents over their children shut-eye again. Six months after the first consultation, they all gave children learn an assessment.
Sleep problems tend to dissolve in both groups, reported researchers in Pediatrics. Yet children, whose parents had sleep-related advice in General, better.
After six months or 26 percent of children in the consultation group and in the no-Consulting Group 47% of moderate or hard sleep disorders. By a year but there was no difference, and about one-third of children in both groups had insomnia.
Children in the consultation group less resistance before going to sleep and less time had to go to bed, parents reportedly. But there was no difference in how well she determined on scientific tests to measure, reading, mathematics and spelling skills have.
Quach and colleagues found that the study was small and a follow up with more children among other things, the students for more than a year tracking needs be-. It may be that improvements translate sleep better in academic abilities would take, she said.
Mindell said: "There is no question" that this type of program with school Advisor or nurses the sleep consultation in the U.S. schools could work. "I think this is a wake up call for teachers and school psychologists, they need to always on the lookout for sleep disorders," said Reuters Health.
For now she had to have some important tips for parents of young children, who sleep problems.
The "really simple changes," she said, are: "for your child to bed goes, before nine - we know that this is the turning point;" including reading as part of the bedtime routine-it helps calm children down, there is a focus on them, it helps with writing, it's all good; "then children encourage to fall asleep on their own."
Finally, make sure that there are no unwanted electronics in the nursery, she said. "The game boys will be go on, the computer Los, mobile phones become los."
