Teens' IQ May Rise or Fall Over Time

The brain undergoes more change in adolescence than at any other time of life, save before birth and during infancy. That may help explain why teenagers' IQ can fluctuate significantly over time, as a new study finds, registering large enough changes to move a child from "average" to "gifted" or in the other direction, to below average intelligence.

Cathy Price, a neuroscientist at University College London, led the research, imaging the brains of 33 teens, first in 2004 when they were aged 12 to 16, then again in 2007 or 2008 when they were 15 to 20 years old. The researchers also tested the teens' IQ.

The group's average IQ stayed the same, but 21% of teens showed large changes, as much as 20 points. "It's a huge difference," Price said.

About the same number of teens saw IQ improvement as decline. "It was not the case that the young low performers got better and the young high performers averaged out. Some high performers got even better and some low performers got even worse," says Price.

"Initially we were concerned that it was measurement error," Price says, explaining that IQ has largely been thought to remain constant over time. "But we found that the degree to which IQ changed matched the degree to which brain structure changed. Since the two measurements were independent, this cannot be explained by error."

In teens whose verbal IQ changed, researchers also found brain changes in regions of the cortex related to the articulation of speech. Changes in non-verbal IQ, such as visual and spatial skills and reasoning, were connected with changes in part of the cerebellum; that region is involved in controlling learned finger movements or, more generally, the process by which a learned skill like playing the piano or driving becomes automatic.

Price notes, however, that there were probably changes in other important regions of the brain that she and her colleagues were not able to measure.

Scientists have typically have believed that IQ is determined early in life and is thereafter resistant to change. So the new research, if replicated in a larger sample, could have important implications for education, suggesting, for instance, that students who show low IQ could make great gains later on and shouldn't be put on separate educational tracks.

Like early childhood, adolescence appears to be a "sensitive" period, during which large positive or negative brain changes could affect structure permanently.

Simply choosing to view intelligence as malleable — as this study suggests it is — can itself have large benefits. Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck has shown in multiple studies that children who see intelligence as dependent on hard work rather than innate talent tend to outperform those who view it as fixed. In one study of 373 seventh graders, those who believed intelligence could be changed raised their grades during the next two years of junior high, while those who believed intelligence was fixed did not show better performance.

Commenting on the new research, Oklahoma University professor Robert Sternberg, who was not involved in the study, told the Guardian's Ed Yong that a "testing industry has developed around the notion that IQ is relatively fixed and pretty well set in the early years of life. This study shows in a compelling way that meaningful changes can occur throughout the teenage years."

Sternberg knows this from personal experience. As I wrote when I interviewed him for a story (paywalled article here) on the effects of labeling children for the Washington Post:

Sternberg...did poorly on IQ tests. "The teachers thought I wasn't very bright — and that led me to meet that expectation, which led them to be happy that I met that expectation, and it became a vicious circle. The next year their expectations were a bit lower," [he said].

Fortunately, for Sternberg, his fourth-grade teacher didn't buy it: She saw that there was more to life than test scores, and she encouraged hard work.

As a result, Sternberg became fascinated with psychology and intelligence testing — so much so that he got in trouble in seventh grade for testing classmates himself. He ultimately became a leading expert in the field.

Perhaps the new research on the visible malleability of the teen brain will help inspire a new generation of scientists.

Brain researchers say the big fluctuations in IQ performance they found in teens were not random — or a fluke.

For as long as there's been an IQ test, there's been controversy over what it measures. Do IQ scores capture a person's intellectual capacity, which supposedly remains stable over time? Or is the Intelligent Quotient exam really an achievement test — similar to the S.A.T. — that's subject to fluctuations in scores?

The findings of a new study add evidence to the latter theory: IQ seems to be a gauge of acquired knowledge that progresses in fits and starts.

In this week's journal Nature, researchers at University College London report documenting significant fluctuations in the IQs of a group of British teenagers. The researchers tested 33 healthy adolescents between the ages of 12 and 16 years. They repeated the tests four years later and found that some teens improved their scores by as much as 20 points on the standardized IQ scale.

 

"We were very surprised," researcher Cathy Price, who led the project, tells Shots. She had expected changes of a few points. "But we had individuals that changed from being on the 50th percentile, with an IQ of 100, [all] the way up to being in the (top) 3rd percentile, with an IQ of 127." In other cases, performance slipped by nearly as much, with kids shaving points off their scores.

Price and her colleagues used brain scans to confirm that these big fluctuations in performance were not random — or just a fluke. They evaluated the structure of the teens' brain in the early teen years and again in the late teenage years.

"We were able to see that the degree to which their IQ had changed was proportional to the degree to which different parts of their brain had changed," explains Price. For instance, an increase in verbal IQ score correlated with a structural change in the left motor cortex of the brain that is activated when we speak.

There are lots of factors that may explain changes in IQ. Though this study did not attempt to nail them down, lots of prior research has found that educational environment is key. Some researchers have found that rigorous academic curricula lead to improved IQ scores.

Teens' personalities, work ethic and the home environments are important, too. "There's a lot of variability in neural development during adolescence and in young adulthood as well," says Stephen Ceci, a professor of developmental psychology at Cornell University.

He says this study should give educators and parents pause. "It should caution all of us against assuming that one low IQ score, at one time, is capturing all that an individual is capable of," Ceci says.

Many researchers still say there's loads of evidence to show that IQ scores do reveal something essential about a child's intellectual gifts. Though increasingly, Ceci says, there's a consensus that one test is not deterministic. It can't accurately assess a person's talents or future potential.

CDC says condom use increasing among teens

n">(Reuters) - Safe sex may be catching on with teens.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported on Wednesday that condom use by teenagers is on the rise even though overall teen sexual activity remains unchanged.

The CDC said that eight in 10 teen males ages 15-19 surveyed as part of its National Survey of Family Growth reported they had used condoms during their first sexual experience.

That is up 9 percentage points from 2002, the last time the data was collected.

The authors of the report did not explain why condom use has jumped. But they said the rise was consistent with other trends they've seen in recent years, including a decline in teen pregnancies.

While condom use among males has spiked, the use of "other methods" of birth control, including withdrawal and sterilization, has fallen among teen boys' partners, the CDC said.

The CDC also found a significant increase in the percentage of female teens using hormonal methods other than the pill, such as injectables and contraceptive patches, to prevent pregnancy.

Six percent of teen females in the latest survey said they used a non-pill hormonal method at their first sexual experience, up from 2 percent in 2002.

CDC researchers interviewed 2,284 teen girls and 2,378 teen boys -- the largest sample of teenagers undertaken as part of their ongoing National Survey of Family Growth.

Teenagers' overall use of contraceptives has changed little since 2002, the CDC said. One exception was the number of teens who said they were employing a two-pronged approach to pregnancy control, combining the use of a condom with birth control pills or other hormonal contraceptives.

The study found that 16 percent of teen males used a condom in combination with a female partner's hormonal method, up from 10 percent in 2002.

About 43 percent of never-married female teens it surveyed, and about 42 percent of never-married male teens, reported they were sexually experienced, similar to 2002.

When CDC researchers asked teens who have not had sex why they were abstaining, the primary reason given was that it was "against religion or morals," not because they were worried about unplanned pregnancies or sexually transmitted diseases.

Overall, sexual activity among U.S. teenagers seems to be holding steady, the CDC said.

Of those teens who said they were sexually active, 78 percent of females and 85 percent of males said they employed some form of contraception during their first sexual experience, virtually unchanged from 2002.

New Efforts to Crack Down on Residential Programs for Troubled Teens

The first legislation aimed at regulating residential programs for troubled teens was introduced on Thursday in the House and the Senate. The bill would crack down on hundreds of programs housing thousands of teens, many of which use punishing "tough love" regimes found to include physical, sexual and emotional abuse.

The Stop Child Abuse in Residential Programs for Teens Act of 2011 was sponsored in the House by Rep. George Miller (D-Calif.) and in the Senate by Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa). A previous version of the bill passed the House twice, but was never introduced in the Senate (at the time, the relevant Senate committee was focused on President Obama's health care legislation).

The legislation would prohibit sexual, physical and emotional abuse and would ban the use of deprivation — of food, sleep, clothing and shelter, for example — as punishment or for any other reason. The use of physical restraint would be permitted only for safety, and all programs would be required to provide residents with "reasonable" access to a telephone. It would require staff to be educated about what specifically counts as child abuse and how to report it, and mandate programs to disclose staff qualifications to parents.

Investigations by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) in 2007-08 found dozens of deaths related to abuse at such residential programs, along with thousands of further allegations, many confirmed, of abuse. GAO investigators posing as parents also discovered widespread use of fraudulent marketing practices.

"The culture of abuse and neglect at some of these programs is simply unacceptable, as is the inadequate staff training, regulation and state oversight. Every day we wait to take action is another day that the safety of teenagers is in jeopardy," said Miller. "I hope my Republican colleagues will join me in helping put an end to these horrific abuses that put the lives of too many children in danger."

Republicans, however, oppose additional federal regulations and believe these programs should be overseen by the states. "Ensuring the safety of the nation's youth is a priority for Americans on both sides of the political divide. We have learned a great deal about the abuse and neglect of troubled youth who live at residential treatment facilities," said Rep. John Kline (R-Minn.), chair of the House Education and the Workforce Committee, adding, "These at-risk youth deserve strong protections and we must ensure federal policies do not undermine the central responsibility of state and local leaders to ensure their safety and hold abusers accountable."

In 2009, I reported for TIME on allegations of sexual abuse at Mount Bachelor Academy, a residential program in Oregon owned by Aspen Education, the largest national operator of residential teen centers, which include wilderness programs and "emotional growth" boarding schools.

A state investigation that followed my article found that Mount Bachelor's treatment regime was "punitive, humiliating, degrading and traumatizing" and included "sexualized role play in front of staff and students." In March, the state also substantiated claims that neglect led to the death of a teen in another Aspen program, Sage Walk. That program had been featured on a short-lived reality show called "Brat Camp."

But while Oregon has some oversight of these programs, in many states, there is none at all. Nail salons and dog grooming outfits are, in fact, more strictly regulated than troubled teen programs, which routinely use corporal punishment and isolation in the guise of treatment.

Cynthia Clark Harvey, whose daughter Erica died of heatstroke and dehydration after staff members of the Catherine Freer Wilderness program she attended insisted that she was faking her problems, testified during the first Congressional hearings held on the issue. "I support the legislation because it preserves true parental rights: the right to free and unmonitored communication with your child, the right to family-centered treatment and the right to know there are national standards that any program must adhere to," she said.

The new bill is supported by the American Psychological Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Child Welfare League and the American Association of Children's Residential Centers. The National Association of Therapeutic Schools and Programs, an industry group, has said it supports the "intent" of the legislation but opposes federal regulation.

10 Risky Behaviors More Common in Sleepy Teens

More than two-thirds of teens aren't getting enough sleep on school nights and that's a problem. According to the latest study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, sleepy teens were more likely to engage in risky health behaviors, compared with their 8-hours-a-night peers.

Research consistently shows that poor sleep is linked to negative health outcomes, like high blood pressure, weight gain and even early death. Sleeplessness during adolescence, largely fueled by computer and Internet use, has also been linked with an increased risk of depression and anxiety.

Last year, the medical journal Sleep published a series of studies on the consequences of sleeplessness among teens. I wrote, at the time:

Researchers found that for each hour of lost sleep, levels of psychological distress rose by 5% in nearly 3,000 17-to-24-year-olds who were followed for 12 to 18 months. Overall, short sleepers were 14% more likely to report symptoms of psychological distress on a standard test, compared with people who got adequate sleep. The effect was especially pronounced among young people who already suffered from anxiety; in this group, lack of sleep triggered more serious mental health problems like full-blown depression and even bipolar disorder, according to the study's lead author, Professor Nick Glozier. But even among those who began the study in good health, less than five hours of sleep meant tripling their odds of psychological distress.

The new findings, which were based on data from the 2007 National Youth Risk Behavior Survey, fit in with past research. The study authors found that 69% of more than 12,100 adolescents aged 12 to 18 reported getting less than the recommended 8 hours of sleep on the average school night. Sleep-deprived kids were more likely than their well-rested peers to report the following 10 risky health behaviors:

Of course, it's impossible to know whether teens' sleeplessness contributed to these problems, or the other way around. It's could well be that things like depression, lack of exercise, Internet use and drinking high-sugar beverages may interfere with proper sleep. But the study, which was published online by Preventive Medicine, is the first to draw associations between lack of sleep and risky health behaviors on a national scale.

The researchers suggest that public health policies encouraging more sleep in teenagers — such as starting the school day later —are needed. "Many adolescents are not getting the recommended hours of sleep they need on school nights. Insufficient sleep is associated with participation in a number of health-risk behaviors including substance use, physical fighting, and serious consideration of suicide attempt," said the CDC's Lela McKnight-Eily in a statement. "Public health intervention is greatly needed, and the consideration of delayed school start times may hold promise as one effective step in a comprehensive approach to address this problem."

n">(Reuters) - Some 115 U.S. children and teens died from influenza last flu season, and many of those deaths were of children who had not gotten an annual flu shot, U.S. health officials said on Thursday.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends flu shots for children as young as six months old, yet less than a quarter of the 74 children over age six months who died between September 2010 and August 2011 had been vaccinated.
"It's vital that children get vaccinated," Dr. Lyn Finelli, chief of the CDC's Surveillance and Outbreak Response Team, said in a statement.
The CDC said parents often mistakenly think healthy children can survive a bout of the flu, but that is not always so.
Among the deaths detailed in the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, released on Thursday, the team found about half of the children had no prior medical condition that would put them at increased risk of flu complications.
The researchers said being young is itself a flu risk factor. Of the children who died, 46 percent were younger than 5 and 29 percent were younger than 2.
Among the 57 children who did have a medical condition, over half had a neurological disorder, 30 percent had pulmonary disease, 25 percent had a chromosome or genetic disorder and 19 percent had congenital heart disease or other cardiac disease.
Only half of the 94 children who died in the hospital were given antiviral drugs, such as Tamiflu. Since the 2009 H1N1 swine flu pandemic, the CDC has recommended immediate treatment with antiviral medications in patients with severe flu symptoms.
"We know the flu vaccine isn't 100 percent effective, especially not in children with high risk medical conditions," Finelli said in a statement.
"That's why it's essential that these two medical tools be fully utilized. Vaccinate first; then use influenza antiviral drugs as a second line of defense against the flu. Right now we aren't fully using the medical tools at our disposal to prevent flu illnesses and deaths in children."
Since the CDC started tracking pediatric flu deaths in 2004, the annual number of deaths has ranged from a low of 46 in the 2005-06 flu season to 282 during the H1N1 swine flu pandemic in 2009-2010.
Even though the circulating strains of flu have not changed since the 2010-2011 flu season, the CDC recommends all Americans over the age of six months get flu shots -- even those who got flu shots last year against the same flu strains.
This year's vaccine protects against H1N1 swine flu and two other flu strains called H3N2 and influenza B.
