WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Osamu Corp is recalling up to 1,800 cases of frozen ground tuna because of histamine that has sickened three people who ate tainted sushi, the Gardena, California, company said.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found decomposition in several samples of the product as well as high levels of histamine in samples at one retail location, the company said in a statement dated October 12 and circulated by the FDA on Friday.

Decomposition can promote formation of histamine, which can cause tingling or burning sensation in the mouth, facial swelling, rash, hives and itchy skin, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea.

The frozen ground tuna was shipped from August 18 to September 8 to distributors AFC Corp, Red Shell Foods and Pacific Fresh Fish Co.

"The distributors have removed the product from the marketplace and are destroying any remaining product," the statement said.

Three illnesses due to elevated histamine levels have been reported, all involving sushi purchased at a single location, the statement said.

Red Shell has sushi franchises in grocery stores in California. AFC has grocery store sushi franchises in nearly every state.

Pacific Fresh Fish is a cash and carry establishment.

Giant Eagle recalls lettuce on listeria threat

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Pittsburgh's Giant Eagle Inc. is recalling packaged iceberg lettuce because of the potential threat of listeria contamination, according to a company statement.

Listeria-tainted cantaloupes have killed at least 23 people across 12 states in recent weeks, matching the death toll in a 1998 outbreak, health officials have said.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has told Giant Eagle about the presence of listeria in a routine test of Giant Eagle Farmer's Market eight-ounce package of shredded iceberg lettuce, the company said in a statement dated on Wednesday and appearing on the FDA website.

The lettuce was produced by River Ranch Fresh Foods LLC, with a use-by date of October 14. There have been no reported cases of customer illness because of eating the food, it said.

The packaged product affected is Giant Eagle Farmer's Market Shredded Iceberg Lettuce. The lettuce also was used in a small number of prepared deli ring sandwiches, the statement said.

California Farm Recalls Lettuce Over Listeria Fears

A California farm said Thursday it was voluntarily recalling bags of chopped romaine lettuce because of possible contamination with listeria, though no illnesses have been reported.

True Leaf Farms of Salinas announced the recall of 90 cartons that were shipped to an Oregon food service distributor. From the distributor, it might have gone to at least two other states, Washington and Idaho.

The Food and Drug Administration notified the company that a sample from one bag taken as part of a random check tested positive for listeria.

Federal health officials say they've gotten better at detecting the germs that cause food poisoning, so they are seeing them in produce more often.

The recall covers product with a use by date of Sept. 29. The bag and box code is B256-46438-8.

California health officials are looking into the contamination, said Ken August, spokesman for the California Department of Public Health, but have not yet determined how the lettuce became contaminated.

"Anytime there is a contaminated food product, we are concerned and take steps so that it's removed from shelves as quickly as possible and to notify consumers," he said.

Listeria rarely shows up in produce, but an outbreak linked to cantaloupe from a Colorado farm has caused at least 72 illnesses, including up to 16 deaths, in 18 states.

August said the state is working with the company to verify the distribution of the produce being recalled. Most of the lettuce was sold to California institutions such as restaurants and cafeterias, he said, and only a small amount went to retail in other states, August said.

The Salinas Valley is known as the "Salad Bowl of the World" for its production of lettuce and numerous other crops.

Lettuce currently picked at the farm is safe to eat, said Steve Church, CEO of Church Brothers, which sells and markets the farm's produce. The company is working with the FDA, Church said, to determine if there are any problems at the farm and is taking more time to sanitize its produce.

(CNN) -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture issued a Class I recall for 40,000 pounds of ground beef products intended for Georgia school lunches, due to possible E. coli contamination.

The beef was produced by Palo Duro Meat in Amarillo, Texas, by September 9, according to a statement released by the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service Friday. It was shipped to two Georgia warehouses, where it was to be distributed to a variety of institutions, including six school districts associated with the National School Lunch Program.

However, USDA authorities say they are not aware of the beef having been served as part of any school lunches, adding that the bulk of the beef products have not left the warehouses.

The beef was shipped in 40-pound boxes. Each case contains the mark "Est. 7282" and a production code of 19110.

The contaminated products may have gotten mixed in with commercial products due to a sample tracking error, according to the USDA statement. Neither the company nor the USDA has received any reports of illnesses related to consumption of the beef.

E. coli bacteria can cause bloody diarrhea, dehydration and, in severe cases, kidney failure, according to the USDA statement. Babies and toddlers, seniors, and persons with weakened immune systems are the most susceptible to food-borne illnesses, the statement says.

n">(Reuters) - A Kansas-based food processor recalled hundreds of pounds of fresh-cut cantaloupe on Friday because of possible Listeria contamination linked to melons from Colorado that were blamed for an outbreak that has killed eight people.

Carol's Cuts was recalling 594 pounds of cantaloupe packaged in 5-pound trays and as an ingredient in fruit medleys distributed in Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska, a recall notice posted on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration website said.

In addition to the eight deaths, a total of 55 people in 14 states have been sickened from Listeria-tainted cantaloupes traced to melons grown at Colorado-based Jensen Farms Inc and sold under the brand name Rocky Ford.

"The Carol's Cuts recall is part of a larger recall involving cantaloupe traced to Rocky Ford cantaloupes produced by Jensen Farms," the recall notice said.

"Consumers who may have the recalled Carol's Cuts product in their possession should return it to the place of purchase for a full refund or destroy it," it added.

The Food and Drug Administration said last week the tainted cantaloupes were shipped to 17 states. Not all states that have received shipments of the melons appear to have seen infections.

The recall notice said the fruit in the Carol's Cuts recall, which had use-by dates of September 19 at the latest, was sold to institutional customers including restaurants and may have been used in salad bars or as a fruit menu item.

The Colorado company linked to the outbreak, Jensen Farms, has voluntarily recalled its cantaloupes shipped between July 29 and September 10.

Listeria monocytogenes, the bacterial strain found in the tainted cantaloupes, thrives at low temperatures, the CDC said on its website. Infection can be particularly dangerous for elderly people, pregnant women and patients with weakened immune systems, health officials said.

Previous Listeria outbreaks linked to produce were traced to sprouts and celery.

Select blisters were rotated 180 degrees within the card, reversing the weekly tablet orientation and making the lot number and expiration date no longer visible, the FDA said in a statement on its website.

The error means the daily regimen for the oral contraceptives may be incorrect and could leave women at risk of an unplanned pregnancy, it said. The defects do not pose any immediate health risks.

"This packaging error and the potential for this error to have affected other oral contraceptive products resulted in the company issuing the recall of multiple lots," the agency said.

The recall takes effect immediately. It includes Cyclafem 7/7/7, Cyclafem 1/35, Emoquette, Gildess FE 1.5/30, Gildess FE 1/20, Orsythia, Previfem and Tri-Previfem.
