They said people start off brightly in the morning, but mood deteriorates throughout the day until a boost late in the evening.

Unsurprisingly, they found people tended to be happier on Saturdays and Sundays than during the working week.

Changes in the hours of daylight also had an effect.

It has been difficult for scientists to investigate changes in mood. The authors of this study argue that traditional laboratory tests are limited as they are based on university students self-reporting their mood.

Some academics have begun looking at social networking sites to gather data on a wider and more diverse group of people.

Mood rhythm

The team at Cornell University, New York, argued that monitoring Twitter provides a real-time reflection of mood.

They looked at messages from 2.4 million people's public tweets from 84 countries and used language detection software to score positive and negative feelings.

Positive feelings started high, but began to fall in mid-morning and then picked up again in the evening. Generally, positive words appeared more at the weekend than during the week.

However, the researchers say work is not necessarily to blame as the shift in mood pattern "was similar on weekends and weekdays" which instead "points to sleep and the biological clock" as the cause.

Negative feelings were lowest in the morning and increased throughout the day. The researchers said: "This pattern also suggests that people may be emotionally refreshed by sleep."

Researchers said day length affected positive tweets, but not negative ones suggesting "that winter blues is associated with diminished positive affect but not increased negative affect".

Most of us use Twitter to a) self-promote, b) find out what Kim Kardashian is up to, or c) freak out over the news. But for social scientists, a 24/7 global stream of constantly updated status messages is a rich vein for research — as Michael Macy and Scott Golder of Cornell University learned when they combed through more than 500 million tweets as part of a study that is being published in the Sept. 29 Science.

Macy and Golder searched those half a billion tweets — published by users from 84 countries between February 2008 and January 2010 — for roughly 1,000 words associated with both positive and negative emotions. The researchers also looked for emoticons.

What they discovered is that Twitter can serve as a kind of global mood ring, reflecting the rise and fall of emotions around the world. On Twitter, the researchers discovered, emotions tend to run positively in the morning, peaking around breakfast time before falling and bottoming out in the late afternoon, then rebounding again in the evening. That pattern held up across cultures and countries.

Interestingly, the same mood cycle recurs on the weekends, except pushed back a couple of hours since people tend to sleep and wake up later, which seems to indicate that it's not simply the annoyance of being at work — and the pleasure of being off the clock — that drives those cycles, as Golder told the New York Times:

This is a significant finding because one explanation out there for the pattern was just that people hate going to work. But if that were the case, the pattern should be different on the weekends, and it's not. That suggests that something more fundamental is driving this — that it's due to biological or circadian factors.

Of course, work probably does play a role in driving our mood. Global emotions tended to hit an overall low on Monday afternoons before steadily rising and peaking on the weekends — although you could have learned that by listening to Rebecca Black. The study found that seasons did not seem to overly influence the mood — no evidence of any uptick of negative emotions during the winter months. Positive emotions did trend upward around the spring equinox and fell with the approach of the fall equinox in late September, suggesting that people were dismayed at the thought of the approaching shorter days.

Admittedly, it's not exactly earth-shattering that people around the world are just working for the weekend. But the sheer wealth of data produced by Twitter — and by other popular social media formats — allows researchers to examine the dynamics of large human groups in far more ambitious ways. Another group of sociologists at the University of Vermont mapped how the world via Twitter, responds to major news events, with negative emotions increased in the wake of the March earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

Of course, Twitter is an imperfect representation of how actual human beings actually feel. The software used by researchers struggles with sarcasm, which does sort of feature prominently in social media. (Maybe they can take a lesson from @Humblebrag.) And while preening social media dons may pretend otherwise, not everyone is connected, which means you're getting a (relatively well to-do, young and tech-savvy) slice of the whole human pie. But every day that slice gets a little bigger, so expect more sociological social media research to come.

Right now, armies of marketers, pollsters and social scientists are trying to figure out what Americans are thinking about — issues like global warming or Lady Gaga's latest outfit. Surveys are only so good: It's hard to get a big enough sample to be sure of the results. That's particularly vexing for social scientists who want a high standard of accuracy.

But now they have a new window on the world: Twitter. Normally, if social scientists wanted to design an experiment on how peoples' moods change during the course of a day, for example, they'd recruit some of their students. But statistically, what 50 college kids do doesn't really reflect the American public.

Scientists need lots of people to make solid conclusions about human behavior. That's why Scott Golder went to Twitter, where millions and millions of people express themselves daily.

"This is the stuff of daily life," Golder says. "Whether you're doing that with diaries from a few hundred years ago or you're doing it with the tweets of today, you're still looking into the personal lives of regular people, and that is very revealing."

What Golder and his colleagues at Cornell University wanted revealed is: How do peoples' moods go up and down — positive or negative — through the day? That might then reveal how much and when your biorhythms or your environment control the way you feel.

The researchers used a common computer program that scans text for key words in tweets that reflect the writer's mood, or, as psychologists call it, affect. These are words like aching, afraid, cynical, fear, mad and fury, Golder says. These words fall into the "negative" category.

On the positive side, Golder looked for words including agree, definitely, fine, outgoing, paradise and pleasing. And, of course, this being the Twitter generation: "Awesome. Awesome is an awesome word."

Golder, who's a graduate student in social and computer science, spent months with a team of researchers scanning tweets by more than 2 million people in 84 countries — more than a half-billion tweets.

"We found there are two peaks in positive affect during the day. One occurs first thing in the morning and one occurs late at night," he says.

Of course, you say, the dip in the middle is when you go to work. But Golder says no. "The shape of the rhythm — when it peaks and valleys — is the same on the weekend as during the week."

Golder doesn't know why mornings and evenings tend to be brighter than the rest of the day. A night's sleep could explain the morning bump-up. Biochemicals associated with a person's circadian rhythm could also be at work, and certainly what happens to you during a day would have an effect.

A New Dimension In Research

While the results might not be terribly surprising, they point to a new "social media" wave in academic research.

When it comes to research, "we've really been in flat Earth over all these years, and suddenly we've discovered there's a third dimension," says David Lazer, a practitioner of both political and computer science at Northeastern University.

Though tweets are public, Lazer says, academic institutions should be writing up ethics standards for the use of data from social media. He emphasizes that scientists should be careful about what they conclude from the data.

"I mean, these are not scientifically designed instruments to collect under pristine circumstances; it's often difficult to tell what's causing what," he says.

But Twitter certainly can reveal peoples' views. Kent Cavender-Bares is an environmental scientist at the University of Minnesota.

"I see it as a great way to get a pulse of what's going on in the country," he says. Cavender-Bares plans to monitor tweets about climate and then produce educational material to answer the most common questions.

He says you still need people to double-check computerized language scanners — after all, computers don't recognize sarcasm or some words with more than one meaning, like "blizzards."

"Real quickly you find out that people are tweeting about Dairy Queen Blizzards — an ice cream, rather than a snowstorm," he says.

The Cornell research appears in the journal Science.
