No vaccine anthrax, test on children _ for now

WASHINGTON (AP) - the anthrax vaccine to be tested in children? It will be a little longer until the Government decides.

A Board of Directors said Friday that ethical issues should be resolved - but if this can be accomplished the vaccine may be tested in children to ensure it is safe and learn the essence of dose where it is necessary in a terrorist attack.

Due to concerns that terrorists could use the potentially deadly bacteria, the Government has stored the vaccine. It has been widely tested on adults, but children ever.

The question is to test doctors will know if the immune system for children meet the shots well enough for the protection of the signal or not. The children would not be subject to anthrax.

The National Biodefense Science Board said Friday that a separate review panel should consider the ethical issues do these tests in children. If completed successfully, the Panel, said, the Department of Health and Human Services should develop a plan for a study of the vaccine in children.

How protect youth after an attack of coal is a difficult question, says Dr. Nicole Lurie, Member of the Commission and assistant Secretary for preparedness and response of the public health service. "Protection of children is still, for me, among the most important responsibilities that we as a nation."

The Council provides advice to the Department of Health and Human Services, on the preparations for the chemical, biological and nuclear events. His voice was 12 - 1.

There is no date limit for the Government to decide or not to follow. And if it does not agree, we don't know too much how long he would to find money for this type of research and to obtain authorization to review the boards at medical centres which would conduct studies.

Another big question is whether if the parents would send their children to test a vaccine when there is no immediate threat. It is not possible to get the coal from the vaccine, but there are side effects. Adults, tir-site pain, muscle pain, fatigue and headache are the main and rare but serious allergic reactions have been reported.

Anthrax is among several potential weapons of bioterrorism and is of particular interest because it was used in the letters sent to media and others in 2001, claiming lives of five people and sickening 17. That prompted an extensive screening of mail and better ventilation and testing in postal facilities, and Government agencies.

The FBI attributed the attacks - by email on Bruce Ivins, a scientist with a lab biodefense of the army, who committed suicide before could be charged.

Anthrax can be difficult to treat, especially if someone has inhaled spores of anthrax. Millions of doses of antibiotics have been stored since the 2001 episode, and two experimental treatments of toxin-clearing are also be stored.

US troops deploy in Iraq, Afghanistan and other countries are required to obtain anthrax shots. Since 1998, more than 1 million have been vaccinated. After the prosecution opposed the requirement, a federal judge suspended the programme in 2004, find fault in the process of the Food and Drug Administration to approve the drug. The following year, the FDA has reaffirmed its conclusion that the vaccine is safe.
